Pamela Caravas To All Instructors

I’m super excited to join the HSP staff and family this upcoming school year, bringing with me over 30 years of teaching and parental experience. I am a proud JMU alumnus and parent. In the fall, you can find me cheering on my Dukes. Even though I received my master's degree from ODU, my heart is with JMU, as it’s also my hometown. My love for the beach brought me to the Hampton Roads area over 37 years ago. I taught first, third, and fourth grade as a classroom teacher with Chesapeake Public Schools. I took a few years off to be a very involved mom with my three children: Alexis, Andrew, and Alayna, volunteering whenever and wherever I could. My children used to say that I spent more time at their school than they did. However, my love for teaching never left my heart. For the past 10 years, I have been a reading specialist for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. I focus on the phonetic approach to reading in the early years and building a solid foundation for becoming a strong reader. Hands-on learning and being an active participant are the best instructional practices for math in young children. To do math, you need to understand the basics and build on that knowledge. I believe that you teach the whole child and find their individual strengths and weaknesses. I want my classroom to be a safe place where they are encouraged to learn, ask questions, and make mistakes. I want to instill a love for learning and for God in their formative years that will empower them as they continue to grow in all areas. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity to work with your child and your family.
